The Open 2019

Another Aca Open Competition has been completed!

And this one was a BIG ONE! Not only because of how we did, but also because of the other groups involved! But first…

Drumroll please…………………………… BL won 3rd place!

We are so excited, proud, and honored to have won 3rd place! It was some STIFF competition, but we worked incredibly hard over the summer to make sure we put on a good show. So happy to say it paid off!

BUT… as we said above… the most excited part of this years competition was all of the other groups! The whole competition was just a Blacklight family reunion! Let’s break it down…

COMPETING GROUPS:

SOUND OFF

Diana is a member, Tyler a former member

FOREST FIRE

Craig is a member of this beatbox tag team along with BL friend & Ember Vocals member Michael Wingate

WITCHPITCH?

Anna is the director and arranger of this INSANELY talented high school group from Salem MA

SPIDERHORSE

Another beatbox tag team of Beatbox House members Chris Celiz and Gene Shinozaki, and very good friends of BL <3

MARTINI GLASS

No relation… but they were FAB!

Guys… this competition was just a love fest. The support the groups had for one another was truly amazing. We were BLOWN AWAY by all of the talent on that stage.

It is also so incredibly exciting to see not one, but two beatbox tag teams competing in an a cappella competition. As you know, Blacklight is very beatbox focused. We really lean into beatbox sounds, and are quite loud in the whole beatbox vs. vocal percussion debate. We are very active, as competitors and spectators, in the beatbox scene. We attend and perform at beatbox competitions, and are friends with many in the beatbox community.

Speaking as Anna and not Blacklight for a moment, I can attest to the love and support the beatbox community holds for one another, and for people like me who don’t beatbox, but still love the art form. For a community based so heavily in competition, they are so open, welcoming, and supportive of each other. When a new sound is learned, they share it. They spread the wealth. They are constantly trying to move the art form forward, and make sure they take the whole community with them.

So it is incredibly upsetting to me to witness the great divide between the beatbox and a cappella communities...Especially when I hear from the beatboxers that they aren’t supported, are bored, or are just not utilized when they try their hand at a cappella.

So seeing two tag teams at an a cappella competition was so incredibly moving and exciting for me and Blacklight as well. Especially since one of them won!!!!!!! This competition was truly a huge moment for the beatboxers and a cappella kids everywhere.

And now for the full results…

BIG NEWS!

We have released our very first music video!

We are so incredibly proud to be able to say that! Here’s to many more!

BL worked so incredibly hard to create this lil gem. We recorded and mixed the audio ourselves. We filmed everything ourselves on two separate days. We edited the video ourselves. This was very much a group effort, which makes it even more exciting to release it to the world!

If you’ve already watched, THANK YOU! Please share it with your friends, and give it a like and comment if you haven’t yet! Let us know what you think!

And if you haven’t watched yet…

Whoops...

WOW. It’s been a minute.

Apologies for not keeping the “blog” updated…. We will try to do better!

For those keeping following along, we had a BUSY 2019 so far! We started the year off performing for N.E. Voices and ICHSA Quarterfinals in Wakefield MA. We absolutely LOVED those gigs. The high school students in the crowd were for sure our most rowdy yet! It was also a really nice moment for Anna, Shannon, Diana, and Craig who got to perform for their actual students.

Along with many more gigs here and there (check our Events page for previous and upcoming gigs!), we recorded, filmed, edited, and released our first music video! Check it out here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iSfeSnjcNQ

In August we got to compete in the Aca Open again! More to come on that later….

We are now working hard to get back into the swing of things, and get a new beatboxer initiated and up to speed.

Looking forward to the rest of 2019, and the beginning of 2020!

Our first scheduled gig of 2019 (so far) will be N.E. Voices! 7PM on Friday February 1st, at Chelmsford High School (MA). WOO!

N.E. Voices is an a cappella competition for local High School groups. It is highly competitive, with an “audition” process held beforehand using videos, to pick the few competitors that will appear live on stage. Friday is the competition, and Saturday, the competing groups get to expand their a cappella, music, and performing knowledge through workshops and classes!

The competing groups are:

WitchPitch? — Salem High School

Northern Lights -- Plymouth North HA

Voices ReChoired -- Marlborough HS

The Thursdays — Chelmsford High School

The Crescendos — Chelmsford High School

NOTEorious — North Reading High School

Falconize — Danvers High School

The Soundwaves

We will be performing during the judges deliberation on Friday, and our goal is to keep the crowd HYPED! (You know we will!)

—If you go to our “Event” page, you can find all the details for the event, and find the link to tickets!—

Not only are we performing, but three of our members are also involved with the actual event.

Diana is a board member for N.E. Voices, and the High School Competition Director! So official.

Shannon helped to create the whole competition, and will have her high school group, Voices ReChoired, there competing!

Anna will have one of her groups, WitchPitch? from Salem High School, there competing as well!

It will be a busy day for these ladies!

Oh, and we will be selling MERCH! For the first time ever!

So come support not only us, but these incredibly talented high school a cappella groups! And buy some MERCH!!!

See you there!
